What Gardening Zone Am I In?
Plant Hardiness Zones
It is extremely important to find out which plant hardiness zone you are living in to have a successful home gardening strategy.
All plants grow better in very specific growing zones which you will find in the growing information that accompanies all seeds and plants you wish to grow.
Most seed packets have hardiness zone maps printed on the back of their packages so you will know which zone they will grow well in along with the time of year they perform the best.
Some hardiness zones are split now and you may want to perform a search on any search engine to find your exact hardiness zone.
Just enter the words ” plant hardiness zone” into the search engine and a list will appear and for example, for me living in the U.S. I would pick the link title “U.S.D.A Plant Hardiness Zone Map“.
After opening the page I entered my zip code into the form at the top of the page then clicked the find button to get the exact U.S.D.A. planting zone I live in and where the garden is located.
I just now completed this exact search by entering my zip code and my plant hardiness zone came back 8b.
This information is extremely important for seed germinating times and what varieties of plants will grow best when planting in your home gardening zone.
When I was starting out all these tools and information listed above on these pages was probably the best knowledge I was able to gain for understanding home gardening, planting procedures and weather patterns.
To this day even after many years farmers almanac still helps me by sending great information in their newsletters and planting reminders throughout the gardening season. It is an invaluable home gardening tool!
Home Gardening Tips For An Amazing Home Garden
Listed below are helpful home gardening tips and ideas on how to start a garden from scratch.
I am assuming that you have already picked a home gardening plot to put your home garden on.
Below are some home gardening ideas to consider before establishing your first garden bed.
Follow these tips and advice and they will help you avoid common issues most of us experience when first starting out home gardening.
Choosing Your Home Gardening Site
When choosing your home gardening site there are many things to consider. Listed below are many critical things to take into consideration while planning your home garden.
Clearing Your Home Gardening Site
If you are like most of us when starting out in home gardening you will more than likely have some clearing of weeds, brush and possibly trees before you can actually get started preparing or setting up garden beds.
Before your go out there with your lighter in hand and start burning up everything in the neighborhood, you may want to take a look at some information we put together about yard waste disposal.
Discover great ideas about how you can best recycle yard waste materials for future use in your home gardening ventures.
Reveal the most beneficial use for yard waste and debris for home gardening by clicking the image on the right.
During this home gardening process you might also want to consider what you want to grow and how much space will be required.
Crops like corn, tomatoes, melons and cucumbers can take up quite a bit of valuable garden real estate while other crops like greens, peas, beans and lettuce don’t take quite as much.
If yours space is somewhat large you may consider a permaculture garden design where all of your garden plants can grow in unity creating an awesome food forest.
There are several different permaculture garden types that are all great designs for home gardening which are very cost efficient and have been known to grow around 8 times more food than a conventional garden bed.
What you will be growing will be directly effected by how much space for your home garden you have available for use or should I say how effectively that you use the home gardening space that you have.
Type Of Soil In Your Home Gardening Plot
The type of soil that you are working with plays a important role when it comes to home gardening. It is mandatory that your have the right type pf soil that will easily support plant life while allowing your garden plants to thrive.
The first thing that you want to do is take a shovel and dig down a couple of feet in your proposed home gardening plot.
What did you find?
If you found sand or clay you will most likely have to use raised garden beds unless you have unlimited resources and time to amend your soil.
- Sandy Soil – You can amend sandy soil for years and it still will not easily retain soil life or minerals needed by plants to thrive.
- Clay soil – Clay Soil can be amended overtime with compost to grow in but can get very expensive and takes a lot of time and resources.
- Dark Loamy Soil – If you found dark loamy soil you are one of the lucky ones you are good to go for light amending then for planting.
If your potential garden soil is less than desirable you can use another soil building technique for your home gardening plan.
Permaculture Gardening For Your Home Garden
With all the constant insecurity issue coming about with our national economy and food supplies being disrupted, permaculture gardening methods may be worth closely checking into.
Like I had just mentioned above permaculture gardening is a great long term fix for any poor soil conditions and allows you to plant all types of edible plants and trees in one area which is often referred to as a food forest.
Permaculture gardening is a type of gardening where you use all of what nature has to offer to your benefit in growing a permanent agriculture type garden.
Permanent agriculture method consists of growing perennial plants which return every year like (fruits & berries), fruit trees and annual vegetable garden plants all in the same home garden setting.
This type of gardening is an excellent choice for new homesteaders or trying to establish a sustainable home garden that will produce a fresh food supply for years when set up correctly.

Is Your Home Gardening Site Level?
The area you choose for your home gardening site needs to be level so your watering efforts don’t run down the way.
For best results level out your area to contain the water around your garden plants.
If your entire property is at a slight incline you may want to consider a hugelkultur gardening approach building up raised beds using earth mounds (known as swales) with water catchment areas in your home garden to grow your plants.
These Hugelkulture beds can grow anything you want to grow for many years which are perfect for perennial garden plants and vegetable gardens alike.
If your home garden site is on a grade or hillside you may need to create terraces to level areas you wish to use. This is a critical step in the beginning of your landscape design and it will need to be dealt with in the very beginning.
How Much Sun Does Your Potential Home Gardening Site Get?
Your garden needs to get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day preferably in the morning hours for most vegetable garden plants. Some shade tolerant plants can do with less direct sunlight and still grow well.
If your live in the southern states that are close to the equator or desert areas it is good that your garden has some shade in the late afternoon
The shade gives the plants time to recover from the intense heat earlier in the day.
Shade cloth can also be used to regulate the amount of intense sunlight your plants get daily if there is no shade available.
Garden Positioning For Your Home Gardening Plan
Your spring home gardening layout should be positioned toward the southwestern part of your property away from other structures that may block the morning and mid day sunlight.
You will want to allow for the most direct sunlight during the early hours of the day.
As we mentioned above if you are living in a warmer climate you may want some shade on your garden in the late afternoon during the deep summer months.
Visually track your sunlight movement and you will notice that it moves basically east to west.
You will want the widest side of your home gardening plot as close to parallel as possible with the movement or direction of the sun which will provide the most sunlight to as many garden plants as possible.
Are Tree Roots In Your Home Gardening Plot?
If you have large trees in the general area of your garden, you may have issues with the roots taking up your garden water.
Even if you did not dig any up on your test dig, when you start watering and adding nutrients to your garden the roots will find there way to the source of the water.
Over time your garden plants will suffer from lack of water and nutrients which the trees are using .
Growing in raised garden beds will help with this issue.
Are There Yard Pests In Your Home Gardening Plot?
Do you have moles or gophers in your immediate area?
If so you will have to use raised garden beds with hardware cloth attached to the the bottom to keep them away from your plants roots.
I have personally dealt with the sandy soil, tree roots and the mole issues and I assure you if you have any of these issues in you garden area you can save yourself a lot of problems and start out growing in raised garden beds.
There is nothing like seeing a row of carrots that had been growing for a while in the ground starting to wilt thinking they were ready to harvest to find only the tops remained in the soil. The moles had completely eaten the carrots under the soil!
I highly recommend growing in raised beds to eliminate many issues like these mentioned above and many more unseen issues that may occur. Raised garden beds will put you way ahead in your gardening efforts without the headaches when set up correctly.
Water For Home Gardening Use
For best results with your home gardening plan you will need a water source close by.
If you do not have one consider installing a permanent line because toting buckets of water in the summer months is no fun at all.
Installing a water line in the beginning will save you a ton of labor during the growing season by way of installing automated sprinkler systems, or other automated watering devices that continuously keep your plants well watered with small effort on your part.
You will also need a good garden hose and some watering accessories to maintain a water supply to your garden.
Soil Building And Amending Tips For Home Gardening
You need to find room for composting, this will save you a lot of cash in the long run.
In my opinion, you can not buy good quality compost at most of your big box stores garden centers.
Most of the products you get will grow plants but will require a large amount of amending and fertilization with even more store bought items to perform well.
Compost can be easily made on site which will provide nutrient rich fertile soil full of life to grow all of your home gardening plants in plus it saves a load of money by making it yourself.
Plus you know it is free of remaining bio waste, pesticide and herbicide residues which gives you the comfort of knowing it is safe to use!
Whether you are growing in the dirt or growing in raised garden beds, compost in its finished state can be applied on top of your existing soil or loaded directly into in your raised beds.
It also be used as a side garnish and worked into the soil around the base of your garden or landscape plants.
It is highly recommended to use a compost mix for filling raised beds to avoid many of the the weed issues later on from using it directly on the ground.
Weeds and grasses tend to love this stuff as well as your garden plants do.

Worm Castings are another part of your home gardening strategy to consider for amending your garden soil and giving your plants a huge boost in growth and productivity
Studies say that application of worm castings create much healthier plants that can produce about 30% more yield per plant on average.
It is recommended to use worm castings along with compost as a mix to get both a bacterial and fungus based compost to give your plants a complete food source.

It is best to start your garden out small to keep from getting overwhelmed and discouraged.
After you grow some plants and harvest successfully you will get more confident in your abilities take on a larger home gardening plot later.
Herb gardening is great home gardening plan for growing plants for culinary purposes as well as medicinal purposes.

You May Want A Vegetable Garden In Your Home Gardening Plans
Did you know you can actually have both of these types of home gardens together with much better results than just having one or the other?
Lets say you want in your home gardening plan to grow a tomato garden which many people do.
You can grow tomatoes together with many other beneficial plants to help them thrive and be much more productive.
This would be known as companion planting for tomatoes were you grow certain types of plants together in your home gardening plot to get optimal growing results from all of your tomato plants while limiting pest attacks.
These welcomed beneficial predatory insects attracted by the companion plants help protect the garden plants that mean the most to you.
Get started researching all these gardening ideas mentioned above, then find yourself some good vegetable seeds for plants you may want to grow to eat.
Germinate the seeds indoors during cool weather or just and plant them out in your new garden plot when the season is right.
Choosing Your Garden Seeds
Heirloom seeds are always the best choice in the home gardening strategy because after you grow the plants then you can collect the seeds and keep them for next growing session to plant again.
You can not do this with hybrid plant seeds because they normally will not grow the same plant that you are growing in your garden now.
Hybrid seeds are unstable and can grow any of the parent plants that their genes were spliced with.
It is always best to stick with heirloom seeds( for tomatoes for instance) for
much better flavor and they don’t produce all their fruits at once, when cared for properly heirloom tomato plants will produce fruit throughout the growing season so you will have great tasting food all summer long.
Don’t make the mistake we have all made of buying cheap bargain seeds for your garden.
These seeds are really cheap for a reason, usually having some kind of issue like genetic defects or disease that you really don’t want to waste your time with.
It is a motivation killer to work hard to get your garden growing well and your vegetable plants just fall over dead or do not produce any yield at all.
Stick with good quality seeds!

Seed Starting For Home Gardening
Seed starting is a simple task which all the information required to do this is normally found on the back of the seed packet of the garden plants you chose to grow.
When it comes to seed starting for home gardening there are a couple of ways you can go about this task.
Many experienced gardeners like to sow their seeds directly into the garden beds which works great when the growing conditions are right outside.
Although this is perfectly acceptable. if you are growing in the spring with a short growing season you may want to start your seeds indoors.
My personal favorite is to start all of my garden seeds indoors due to the fact that many of my seeds sowed outdoors in the garden beds always seen to get taken out by some act of nature or someones pets running loose digging in my garden beds.
I personally have had the best luck when planting healthy seedlings with some size to them which the bugs and animals don’t tend to bother as much.
You can do your seed starting either way just pick which suits your situation the best. You will know which seed starting method is best for you over time.
If you would like to know more about my seed starting techniques to give your garden plants a jump start be sure to visit my how to use worm casting post to find out more. Just look above under worm castings heading and you will find an image link to take you there to learn some secrets.
There are also some great free informational products available from many seed suppliers listed on this page about this subject that you may want to check into by clicking on the “green links” associated with them.
What Not To Do Starting Out In Home Gardening
I have saved this home gardening tip for last because I want you to remember it.
Commercial home gardening stores are designed to relieve you of every cent they can by selling you high priced gardening products which will need to be replaced quite often.
To be honest many commercial products they sell need to be used along with multiple other products which can damage your garden more than help it over time.
You see when you go ask these salesman what to buy for starting your first home garden they immediately create a huge laundry list of things you will need to buy perform this task which can easily reach into the hundreds.
This is more than likely the main reason that less than 3 % of the population in the U.S. actually grow their own vegetable gardens these days.
Believe me, it doesn’t cost that much to have a highly productive garden year after year if you plan it out well in advance.
If you want to be successful in home gardening over the long haul invest in other peoples natural gardening knowledge which will help you greatly before going out and putting your investment into commercial garden tillers, garden soils, fertilizers and pesticides that could harm you and your garden.
You can save a save yourself a fortune over time by learning how to be a self sufficient gardener only using natural gardening products that you can make yourself straight from mother nature herself limiting the uses of dangerous chemical and pesticides.
Learn from others how to work with nature to mimic what it does and stop working against it by learning about permaculture gardening methods that we speak about on this entire site for long term home gardening success.
